Barking Irons
Your first question might be, “Just what are Barking Irons?”. Fair enough. A century ago it was slang for pistols. Today, it’s a unique apparel company with a design philosophy that the name only begins to hint at.
Barking Irons has earned praise and coverage everywhere from the New York Times Magazine to HBO’s Entourage - and rightly so. They’ve created one of the most thematically rich line of t-shirts and apparel I’ve ever come across. www.barkingirons.com
A quote from the Barking Irons site might best explain their design approach:
A romantic fascination with history is at the core of Barking Irons design philosophy; when old-fashioned sytles are stylishly reinvenetd they become stronger. A simple but very well-conceived design will alway yields more power than a design that boasts too much.
The gritty, unpretentious styling worn by the various characters of old New York served as jumping off point for the brothers and an excavation of culture and lifestyle began.
Taking inspiration form the 19th century underbelly of Manhattan, the brothers ‚Äì Daniel and Michael Casarella ‚Äì have pulled together a really great collection of designs. They sell a full line of t-shirts, but have also applied their design philosophy to unique hoodies, collared shirts and jewelry as well. All of the pieces have a meaning and a story. Each is told the shirts tags (and the web site as well). For example, the Wide Awake tee above - “When the New York Democrats of the 19th century wanted a campaign slogan that could demonstrate their awareness to rampant corruption and greed they chose Wide Awake, as if to say, ‘No good deed shall go unpunished.’”
The quality of the shirts themselves is outstanding. Soft, well fitted and thoughtfully inked. The price tag is higher than most, but you’re getting a product that is very unique and has a rich meaning that adds value to your closet. These are conversation starting tees.
